André de Quadros is committed to cultural interaction as a means of peaceful engagement for the pursuit of justice.
Cultural activity is an empowered alternative to violence.
Since 2008, I have been involved in the Arab world and in Israel with community music activities. In 2008, as the artistic director of Aswatuna – Arab Choral Festival, I worked with Shireen Abu-Khader from Jordan, to bring together Arab choirs from the Levant – Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria – for a choral project in Petra, Jordan in collaboration with Voces Nordicae from Sweden. In 2012, Aswatuna brought choirs from Jordan, Syria, the United Arab Emirates for a project in Jordan in collaboration with Ishirini from the UK. For the last three years, I have been a partner in the Community Heartsong Project which unites the Israeli Efroni Choir with the Palestinian Sawa Choir. This is a close partnership activity with Maya Shavit, the director of the Efroni Choir, and Eva De Mayo and Rahib Haddad, the conductors of the Sawa Choir. Since 2010, I have taught a conducting course in Jerusalem for Arab and Israeli conductors.
