Focus: Choral Music in Global Perspective

Introducing the little-known traditions and repertoires of the world’s choral diversity, from prison choirs in Thailand and gay and lesbian choruses of the Western world to community choruses in the Middle East and youth choirs in the United States. This book weaves together the stories of diverse individuals and organizations, examining their music and pedagogical practices while presenting the author’s research on how choral cultures around the world interact with societies and transform the lives of their members.

My Body Was Left On the Street - Music Education and Displacement

In the context of the first ever book on displacement and music education, the authors connect displacement to what music might become to those peoples who find themselves between spaces, parted from the familiar and the familial. Through, in, and because of a variety of musical participations, they contend that displaced peoples might find comfort, inclusion, and welcome of some kinds either in making new music or remembering and reconfiguring past musical experiences.

Tanglewood II- Summoning the Future of Music Education

Tanglewood II not only stimulates the profession to examine where this great adventure of music learning is headed— this book also provokes a re-evaluation of present programs and philosophies, tired methodologies, and reinvigorates the role music educators play in the lives of their students. The contributors explore the great questions: Why music? What does music communicate? What is the relationship between music education and democracy? What should be the impact of world music?

The Cambridge Companion to Choral Music

Choral music is now undoubtedly the foremost genre of participatory music making, with more people singing in choirs than ever before. Written by a team of leading international practitioners and scholars, this Companion addresses the history of choral music, its emergence and growth worldwide and its professional practice. Uniquely, the book includes a pedagogical section where several leading choral musicians write about the voice and the inner workings of a choir and give their professional insights into choral practice.

Salamu Aleikum: Music of the Muslim World (Earthsongs)

There are numerous examples of group singing in the Muslim world, almost all of which is non-notated. Many of these group singing genres date back several centuries, such as the genre of Arab music called the muwashshahat, a song tradition that started in Muslim Spain and has continued vigorously until modern times. While there are numerous examples of Muslim group singing, notated part-singing is a product of colonization, Westernization, Christianization, and now globalization.
